Today we are going to learn perhaps the first point of confusion in many potential confusions to come. This hanja 敎 [교] looks eerily like 校 [교] and worst of all is that the usage is very similar. Are you ready to see what can make hanja a very confusing journey? Let’s take a look.
Hanja #41: 敎 – 가르칠 교
It took a long while, but now we have come across a hanja that is very similar to a hanja we already discussed, 校 [교]. However, once you understand the nuance it might become a bit easier. The hanja 敎 [교] is not necessarily related to schools like the hanja 校 [교]. Instead this hanja is revolves around the concept of teaching and as such represents the concept of ‘teaching’. Therefore most of the words with this character deal with people that can teach and places where things are taught. Also because of how Asian cultures view religion as something that teaches us, a lot of words on religion take this hanja as well.
As we learn more hanja, we will learn hanja with similar pronunciations and perhaps even highly similar meanings. It is through understanding the nuance behind each hanja, that we will more easily understand the nuance of each word using that hanja.
