Another hanja numeral for today, but this numeral is perhaps the most useful numeral hanja there is. The hanja is 一 [일] and it is used for a lot more things than most other numeral hanja are used for. If there is one of the numbers you ought to remember, it is this little, simple character.
Hanja #33: 一 – 한 일
The hanja character 一 [일] is the same as writing the number 3 in a text and as always it only represents the Sino-Korean number, not its native Korean counterpart, 하나. Like all hanja numerals, you use this hanja to express an order or a quantity of things. However, this character has uses beyond that.
There is a lot of vocabulary that in a way does express an order, such as when making comparisons. Words expressing superlatives such as “the most” also use this hanja: 제일 [第一]. There a lot of other uses where the why of this hanja are less obvious such as the word 만일 [萬一] which means ‘If; Just in case’. So expect to see quite a few words popping up in this hanja numeral vocabulary list.
If you happen to know any other word you think has this hanja, let us know in the comments.
