Next hanja on the agenda is the humble 室 [실] which I consider a very important and useful hanja to know. A lot of large places will have arrows and the words on those arrows just might have this little hanja in them. So let’s look at this special little character, shall we?
Hanja #39: 室 – 집 실
室 [실] is an intricate-looking hanja, but its meaning is rather plain. This little character represents “room” and as such a lot of words for various types of rooms have this little character. Words such as 화장실 [化粧室] (restroom) and 교실 [敎室] (classroom) all contain this character as you can see.
The word 집 (house) is in the 음훈, not 방 (room). The reason for this is that a few of the words can not only be interpreted as ‘room’, but you could also interpret them as being a ‘house’. Though these instances are fewer than when you need to see it as ‘room’. But, it is interesting to know, no?
If you happen to know any other word you think has this hanja, let us know in the comments.
