It has been a long while since I’ve written something. So to get back into the game let’s warm up with a Hanja word drill. The Hanja for this post is 水 [수]. This is a very basic Hanja representing an essential ingredient of life itself: water.
For future reference: We’ll add links to the individual Hanja in the in Hanja spelled words when a post dedicated to that single Hanja is created.
Hanja #6: 水 – 물 수
The Hanja 水 [수] is a character that represents one of the elements like 火 [화]. This character represents water. Therefore you will often see it show up when words relate to the general concept of water. However, sometimes words with the character 水 have a more abstract connection to the idea of water, rather than water itself. This character you read as [수]. However, while it is a basic character, like 火 [화], it has a fairly limited use when it comes to basic vocabulary. It will start showing up in more advanced word lists.
Also note that some words use the same Hanja, but in a different order. And, because of that different order their meaning is completely different as shown with 생수 (mineral water, spring water) and 수생 (aquatic life).
If you happen to know any other word you think has this 水 [수], let us know in the comments.
