To finish today’s hanja we are going to take a look at the hanja 父 [부]. This is very interesting character for other reasons than vocabulary reasons as there is little vocabulary that actually uses it. Nonetheless one of the words that does use it, is a very important one. Hence why it is considered a basic Hanja.
Hanja #12: 父 – 아비 부
The hanja 父 [부] is the character that represents ‘father’. Unlike what you might think, this character has a lot of use when you delve into the vocabulary for family members and relations. The main reason it is considered basic hanja is due to the word 부모 (parents), as it uses this father character and the character for mother and it is truly a basic word.
As mentioned, however, this character is far more interesting for something that is not really related to Korean. As you know Hanja uses Chinese characters, but they are Chinese characters frozen in time. Koreans hardly modernized the characters they used. As such a lot of Hanja characters are antiquated versions of Chinese characters. This particular Hanja is an example of that. The character 父 is no longer used in modern Chinese. The character modern Chinese uses for ‘father’ is 爸.
If you are learning Chinese or even Japanese, you need to keep in mind that the ‘Chinese’ characters they use while very similar, are still different. Hanja tends to have old Chinese characters neither Japanese or Chinese uses anymore. I hope “father” has taught you that now.
