Time to talk about the final numeral hanja in the lowest level of Hanja, the 8th level. It might be a surprise, but this numeral character is 萬 [만]. However, this numeral hanja has the same thing going on as 一 [일] that it is used far beyond just its status of a number. Let’s take a look at it.
Hanja #36: 萬 – 일만 만
萬 [만] is a intricate character of many possibilities, perhaps more than the number value it represents ’10 000′. It might have surprised you that the character for ten thousands is a considered a basic hanja. However, like 一 [일], you will use this sino-Korean number in a lot more vocabulary than just its direct use.
Because of the massive quantity it represents, you will often end up seeing this 萬 [만] being used more figuratively. In those cases it takes on more of the meaning of ‘innumerable’ and ‘a lot’. There are a lot of words out there that use this character in that way so it is best to keep it in the back of your mind.
