Time is what binds us all and what often dictates what we do at any given point. So it comes to no surprise a lot of grammar deals with time and how to talk about it. The Korean time expression 후에 is no exception even if it is one of the more vaguer expressions on time. This little word allows you to express a time frame easily in Korean.
The Korean time expression 후에 is based on the Hanja 後 [후], which as the meaning of ‘next’ or ‘after’. This form is thus nothing more than a combination between 후 and the particle -에. As such this little expression indicates that the event expressed in the clause after 후에 happens after what is expressed with 후에 this can be a specific time or simply a random event or even an action. However, with verbs you will have to modify the verbs into their noun phrase form with the form-(으)ㄴ, turning the form into -(으)ㄴ 후에.
The difference in meaning between 시 and 시간, etc.
There is an important difference in meaning between 시 후에 and 시간 후에. When you use 시 전에, you express something happens after that specific point in time (세 시 전에 = before 3 ‘O clock). However, 시간 후에 expresses something happens an hour after relative to when you say it (한 시간 전에 = after an hour). Keep this in mind.
가: 생일 파티 전에 뭐 하고 싶어요?
나: 롯데월드타워에서 쇼핑할래요.
A: What do you want to do before your birthday party?
B: I’d like to go shopping at Lotte World Tower.
How To Use
Using the form 후에 is very simple, though you need to keep in mind what type of word you are using. With nouns, you will simply have to write the 후에 after it and there is little else you will need to do.
However, with verbs, you will have to first put those verbs in their past tense noun prase forms, -(으)ㄴ. Only after that all can you can add 에. Thus the complete form with verbs is -ㄴ 후에 when the verb stem ends in a vowel (no batchim) or -은 후에 when it ends in a consonant (batchim). Keep the ㄹ irregular verbs in mind, for example, with this form, but don’t neglect the other irregular verbs.
Just like with 전에, with 하다 verbs, you can simply drop the 하다 and use its noun part instead. This way you needn’t use the noun phrase form of the verb. However, this is a choice you can make. Either way is completely fine.
Also, instead of using 후에, you can also use 다음에 instead. It has the exact same meaning. Lastly, keep in mind that 전에 is the antonym of the form 후에.
