Irregular verbs they are in every language on this planet. They are one of the hardships any language learner has to endure and so does the Korean language learner. Fortunately, there are only seven Korean irregular verb groups. In this article, we will introduce one of those groups: the ㄷ irregular verbs.

The ㄷ irregular verb group, or ㄷ 불규칙, is a group of irregular verbs in Korean grammar that can cause a bit of confusion. The confusion comes from the fact that its irregular form looks a lot like the ㄹ irregular verbs, but does not behave like it. So, when you aren’t that used to this irregular conjugation you might end up making a few mistakes.

However, the ㄷ irregular verb comes with the added complexity you also face with the ㅂ irregular verbs: regular verbs that have the shape of the irregular verb group. As you can imagine this causes quite a few problems with Korean learners just learning these verbs. Some of the important regular verbs are 닫다 (to close), 받다 (to receive) and 믿다 (to believe).

An example:

가: 어떤 음악을 듣나요?

나: 저는 대중음악을 가끔씩 들어요.

A: What kind of music do you listen to?

B: I sometimes listen to pop music.

How To Use

The rules for the ㄷ irregular verbs is not overly complicated, though you need to keep your wits about. The irregularities happen whenever you use a verb ending that being with a vowel. So it happens with verb endings like -(으)면, -(으)려면, -(으)려고 하다, etc. When this happens, the ㄷ transforms into a ㄹ. Unlike the ㄹ of the ㄹ irregular verbs, this ㄹ is treated as a batchim. Always. This can cause confusion initially, but once you get used to it, it isn’t that hard.
