Korean irregular verbs are, considering irregular verbs in languages like French, pretty easy. However, as far as Korean irregular verbs go, the ㄹ irregular verbs can cause a bit of confusion. This is especially true because of the quirk of the ㄷ irregular verbs. However, once you have the rules of the ㄹ irregular verbs under your belt, they will cause you no issues.
The ㄹ Korean irregular verbs, known in Korean as either ㄹ 불규칙, are a rather simple irregular verb group, but due to the ㄷ irregular verbs, some mistakes are bound to happen. However, once you successfully keep both verb groups separate, you will have no issues whatsoever. Furthermore, this irregular verb group also has the most unique rule set among the seven Korean irregular verb groups. Though, in the end, it is still rather simple all in all.
가: 손으로 만드는 만두를 어디에서 사나요?
나: 그런 만두가 있는 가게를 몰라요.
A: Where do you buy handmade dumplings?
B: I don’t know a store with such dumplings.
How To Use
Like for all irregular verbs, to properly use ㄹ irregular verbs, you will have to learn the rules. In a way though, the rules are a bit easier to explain compared to explaining the rules of the ㅡ irregular verb group. There are three major rules you need to know for this verb group.
The first rule is when you use a verb ending starting with ㄴ, ㅂ or ㅅ, the ㄹ is omitted. This happens for endings like -(으)세요, -(으)ㅂ시다, -(으)ㄴ/는, etc. This rule trumps the second rule.
The second rule is that for the ㄹ is treated as a vowel (no batchim) when a verb ending starts with a 으 syllable for batchim ending verb stems. However, this is only true when that verb ending does not begin with either ㄴ, ㅂ or ㅅ. Thus this rule applies to endings like -(으)면, -(으)ㄴ/는, -(으)면서 etc.
The third and last rule is an addition to the second rule. When the verb ending begins with the pattern -(으)ㄹ, that part of the verb ending is simply dropped. This rule applies to verb endings like -(으)ㄹ 거예요, -(으)ㄹ까요, -(으)ㄹ 텐데, etc.
With all other verb endings, you simply do things like you have to do it for any other verb. So, once you’ve memorized these rules, you are set.
