Time is an important part of life. We use it daily as a reference to when we do things and when we meet certain people. It comes to no surprise that a lot of vocabulary is available to us to express time. The Hanja 年 [해] is one of the characters you will often find in words related to time or things with a certain periodicity.

The character 年 [해] carries the meaning of ‘year’ and as such, it is often used in words that either express something that has a frequency of a year or years or simply the concept of a year. It is a rather simple thing to understand really.

Also, like many Hanja, the character 年 has more than one sound attached to it. You either have to pronounce it as [년] or [연]. You pronounce it as [년] when it is not the first syllable of the word. However, if not, you pronounce it as [연]. Keep this in mind.
