The Hanja 每 [매] is a rather simple character that appears in plenty of basic vocabulary. In fact, you probably already know quite a few of the words that incorporate this hanja. Some words that utilize the character are 매일 (), 매주 () and 매냔 (). However, what does the character 每 [매] actually mean?

The Hanja 每 [매] means ‘everything’, ‘every’, ‘all’ and such. Its meaning is very similar to the Hanja 各 [각] and the Korean particle -마다 (it is even listed as one of the meanings in Hanja dictionaries). In fact, the latter is not used for Sino-Korean words that ordinarily uses the character 每 [매] or 各 [각]. Though it would not necessarily be wrong to do so. There is just a certain preference.
